Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Statement

Integral to the STLHSS mission is a commitment to fostering a culture of inclusion and equity within our membership and at our events, and to embracing diversity, in all its forms. Our goal is to promote an environment in which all individuals share a sense of belonging, feel respected, are treated fairly, are provided opportunities to develop their sewing/costuming skills and knowledge, and can enjoy wearing their costumes in a welcoming environment. We seek to remove barriers to these goals, including those grounded in the structural inequities within our own institutions and society. We are working toward a future that is more diverse, equitable, and inclusive for all of our members, teachers, and participants at our events.

In STLHSS, diversity is the presence and celebration of difference that enriches our community, including identity-focused characteristics, such as race, gender, disability or age. Equity is the actuality of and commitment to fair treatment, access, and opportunity for all regardless of identities. And inclusion is how we demonstrate our commitment to diversity and equity and is at the center of our efforts to build an intentional culture that fosters feelings of belonging and honors the differences of our members, teachers, and participants in our events. Inclusion ensures that individuals with different identities are valued and welcome within our community.
